This album is an exception to Chekalin’s work ; although he is well-versed in literature and philosophical thought of the XXth century and even if he likes to verb words, that is, isn’t above verbalizing himself, he preferes his music verbless.
So it seems to have been a singular instance in the maestro’s career that he tolerated a presence of a vocalist, and an amateur at that. But then again, that was exactly the point. A certain dancer has conceived a keen desire to take part in one of the maestro’s projects, transforming herself into a singer, on this particular occasion. She contacted a certain Irish poet(J.Oche) for him ; the poet held office of a cultural attache in the Embassy of Ireland in Moscow at that time ; he agreed to compose lyrics in English. In this way the vocal cycle has been brought about ; treading in the steps of Stravinsky’s “Songs”, on the one hand, or following in the wake of a certain mysticopoetic wave (“The Cocteau Twins”, f.i.) on the other.
As it happened, a newlyarrived singer’s got this peculiarity. Possessed of the charm and a good ear for music, she was incapable of coordinating ear and voice. The composer got over the resulting difficulties by a somewhat paradoxal approach. He recorded the singer’s vocal as a kind of a ‘live sampler’.
Which was, by the way, just fine and quite in keeping with Chekalin’s general attitude as concerns ‘singing to words’ and considering his low tolerance when it comes to any infringement on the music sanctum of his.
